Chapter 1.
Recognition of child Abuse and Neglect:

CASE 3:

a.       What is the diagnosis?
b.      Explain this diagnosis?

c.       What we can see on both cheeks of child?

Key:
a.       Non-accidental bruising.
b.      The face is frequently bruised.
The toddler judges the height of objects poorly and uses the forehead as a testing device.
Objects at the level of the eyes are normally avoided.
Bruising on the lower face is less common.
Conversely the face is picked out as the target in childhood battles.
Parental displeasure may be displayed as violence, and slaps across the face may be harder than intended if tempers fray, or the parents have been drinking.
c.       The child has extensive bruising on both cheeks with accompanying scratches.
There is a little doubt that this child has been assaulted.
The detection of the perpetrator could be far more difficult.
